ABOUT GABRIELLA KAUFFMANN (DK)

Artist, born 1960, Lives and works in Copenhagen.

Kauffmann began her studies at Academie d’Art Rodere in Paris in 1987 and continued at La Grande Chaumeere in 1988. During 1991-96 she lived in Frankfurt A.M. in Germany and completed an academic master degree at Göethe University. Back in Denmark she has over the years been further educated by Ingela Skytte form the Royal Art Academy of Denmark.

She debuted in Paris at Salon des Indépendants at Grand Palais in 1988 and the same year at Salon d’Hiver in Galerie de Nesles also in Paris. One year later in 1989 she presented her works on the German art scene and in 1995 she showed “Neuer Arbeiten” at the Cultural Center in Kassel. Her first major solo exhibitions took place at Galerie Annie Minet in Paris in 1998 and at Leif Jensen Gallery in Copenhagen in 2000.

Her first decades as a painter was closely related to the Northern European movement CoBrA and its dramatic and highly colorful abstract espressionism. But already early in her career the human figure made its entrance followed by a whole new range of moral, existential and spiritual questions. Kauffmann has never abandoned her initial abstract and colorful approach to the canvas but her objective has in more than one sense changed course completely.

Kauffmann explains, “To me – by definition - it all comes down to a structural relationship between everything – physical as well as mental speaking. And to me it it’s the latter ‘mental fabric’ between us that interests me. Why? – because it’s all the non-physical stuff that make us humans! We are in every single aspect defined by an invisible and yet intense entanglement at a mental and spiritual level. Most people – I think - can’t see or recognize this ‘aura’ surrounding and connecting us – but I most definitely can! All the time! Therefore this – by definition – has to be my one and only goal in art. To show everybody that everything is a relationship and that this at its core is the very same energy we call love.”
