  • When the Russian painter Kazimir Malevitj founded Suprematism in 1913 he grabbed the previous decade of Picasso-cubism and transformed it into pure, formal art. The motive was not a visualization of the outside world but the inner structures of art itself.

Malevitj zoomed in until everything became basic geometrical shapes and in 1915 he reached the so called ‘zero point of painting’ when he created ‘Black Square’ – a white square canvas with a smaller black square painted on. This was nothing and this was everything; this was in a way the very the essence of art itself – the invention of an art that doesn’t refer to the world, to the artist or to anything else besides its own objectivity.

By playing with the very idea of Malevitjs ‘Black Square’ the series ‘DANCING SQUARE’ unfolds the hidden potential within the ‘zero point of painting’. Twelve individually placed, sized and colored squares are gently ‘dancing’ on the white tiles and put together on the wall they form nothing less but a rebirth of Suprematism.
