  • Penetrating the skin with needles and applying ink is as old a ritual as mankind itself.

In modern maritime history tattoos became a wide spread phenomenon in harbours all around the world as exotic and prestigious souvenirs on the sun burned bodies of sailors. One of these harbours was Nyhavn in Copenhagen, and in the series

OLD TATTOO MACHINES the photographer Jon Nordstrøm is displaying twelve old, used and striking raw machines belonging to famous tattoo artists working in Nyhavn from 1890 to 1960.

As real as hand prostheses on their former owners we can almost feel their story of countless dreams made into beautiful artworks on an endless ocean of pain on the skin.
