  • The history of art is the history of the eye. Already in ancient Rome artists became so skilled in painting that they created illusionistic murals of doors leading to hidden rooms and fresh grapes on silver dishes ready to be eaten. In the Renaissance the mathematical perspective once and for all pierced a hole through the canvas and in the Baroque period the art of manipulating the eye became a whole school and even got its own name: trompe l'oeil – optical illusion.

Time Magazine coined the term ‘Op Art’ in 1964 as a description of an emerging ism of mainly black and white shapes and lines tricking the eye to the impression of movement, vibrating patterns and warping surfaces.

With the series ‘You Make Me Dizzy’ graphical artist Casper Heijkenskjöld from Sweden has created a pure op art collection for ARTSPOIL. By using almost identical black and white lines on all 12 pieces of artwork Heijkenskjöld seems to suggest that we should combine the patterns in any way we like in order to create our own and unique optical illusion.
